The Men's achieved equal success as it brought home medals in the Open Four and Men's Youth Four.

The Coastweeks regatta is held annually at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic Connecticut. Additionally, the team successfully completed some training on the training vessel Liberator as it was used for transportation to the regatta and for berthing the team while in Mystic.

The women's crew of Toni Birdsong'14, and Brooke Mueller '14 finished first in the Women's Youth Double in what was the first rowing competition for Birdsong who is in her first season of rowing.

The crew of coxswain- Greg Acker '13, Stroke- James Sanwald '11, 3 Seat Connan Ingham '12, 2-Sean Welsh '14, and Bow- Frank Osborne '12, captured second place in the Men's Open Four event. The margin was only eight seconds behind the winning crew of the U.S. Coast Guard. The rowing mariners clocked 7:49 for the 2000 meter course to Coast Guard's 7:41; the equivalent of only 15 feet over the distance of a one and a quarter mile race. Despite losing to Coast Guard, this was a good start for what is expected to be a great fall season for the Varsity Men.

The crew of coxswain-Giuseppe Niosi, Stroke- Frank Romano '14, 3 Seat - Jack White '14, 2 - Seat Greg Trieber '14, and Bow- John Dohring '14 rowed to a third place finish and a bronze medal in the Youth Four event. This was the first time that this Plebe crew has worn the grey and blue in competition. This strong early showing bodes well for what looks like a strong Plebe team.

Also competing for the first time for Kings Point were the crews of:

Men's Open Four Competition
Cox. The Varsity Men’s team qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time in the prestigious ‘Eight’ event while setting a new record and the women qualified for the semi-finals and nearly qualified for the Grand Final in the Women’s Pair event.

While the Dad Vail Regatta is considered to be the national championships for small colleges and universities it is open to schools of all NCAA Divisions and indeed many from each division attend. Celebrating its 76th anniversary, the Dad Vail Regatta attracted one-hundred and twelve schools and thirty-eight hundred athletes to this year’s competition. The crews arrived from states as far away as Washington, California, Florida and Maine to battle for medals and the distinction of saying ‘they are the best in the country’. “With as many as forty-nine crews entered in some events, the competition is very intense and that is why we come. We love the challenge”, commented Head Coach Derek Hartwick.

On the first morning of racing the racecourse conditions were ideal for fast times. The women were the first to progress to the next round. The crew of Anna Simons ’12 and Kacey Rohloff ‘12 rowed through the heats and easily into the semi-finals. “We did not have to push it. It was a good race and we are looking forward to the Semis” commented Simons following the early morning race. The crew posted the 12th fastest time amongst 28 crews.

The early morning Semi-finals of the women’s pairs brought with it almost ideal conditions again for the second day. The Kings Point pair was able to stay within striking distant of qualifying for the first half but experienced some steering issues that made it difficult to regain the ground and qualify. The Mariners finished 5th in the Semi and just missed qualifying for the final. Despite the disappointment, they defeated many DI and DII teams and were the fastest DIII crew of the regatta. “It was a good season for this crew; they finished third in the Metros, second in New York and had a very respectable finish here. Their time of 8:22 in the heats was terrific.” relayed Hartwick following the race.

The Men’s Freshman Four of Coxswain David Wong, Stroke Brendan Rohr ’13, 3- Garrett Poncin ’13, 2-Chris Murphy ’13, and Bow- Brad Wood felt that they rowed their best race of the season despite not making it past the first round. “They rowed very well and their time of 7:46 was their best time of the season but unfortunately not fast enough to get into the final round”, remarked Coach Hartwick of his crew. While not qualifying for the finals, the crew did defeat fellow Landmark Conference team Catholic University.

The Kings Point Varsity Men’s Eight Crew of Coxswain-Greg Acker ’13, Stroke - Steven Jones ’10, Charles Waters ’10, Thomas Gambill ’12, Dustin Downing ’13, Connan Ingham ’12, Sam Diedrick ’10, Frank Osborne ’12, and Kyle O’Connor ’10 were ready for the challenge of racing thirty of the best crews in the country. In the qualifying heats, the Mariners set a new Academy record for the 2000 meter distance and improved their previous season best-time by nine seconds as they completed the course in 6:10 and qualified for the quarter-finals.

Encouraged by the potential and enthusiasm of the varsity men, Hartwick and assistant coach Daniel Udeanu embraced the idea of racing in the competitive category of the Varsity Men’s Eight. “It’s a first time for us entering a Varsity Eight, only thirty teams were accepted and we were one of them. We felt really good about this group and they really excelled.” said Hartwick about the varsity men. The early spring races were difficult with the crew trying to gain some speed since nearly half the crew had just returned from four months at sea. As the season progressed, the crew was able to gain momentum and capture a key race. “We were excited to win the Knecht Cup this year. It was a big win and we are proud of that.” said Udeanu. With that victory, the crew charged forward and continued to find its’ speed as it placed well in the NY State championships and amongst the top three in the New York Metropolitan region.

With the caliber of the crews at the Dad Vail regatta, the team knew that it would be quite a challenge to make the final. Undeterred, the crew approached the competition with confidence and a ‘do our best’ attitude. In the heats, the Mariners rowed well and finished within seconds of DI schools Ohio State and George Mason. Qualified for the next round, the crew then set their sights on getting through to the Semi-finals.

As the conditions changed throughout the day on the race course so did the times. Despite a full effort on the part of the Kings Pointers, the crew was unable to match the speed of qualifiers, Georgia Tech and St. Josephs but was only two and a half boat lengths back. In the final tally, the rowing Mariners were the 4th fastest DIII school of the regatta. To the delight of the large crowd of spectators, the Kings Point men decided prior to the race that however they finished, they would do something at the finish to celebrate their successful season. As the crew completed the race, they held the oar to the gunwale with one leg as they raised her hands in the air and cheered wildly. The delighted crowd laughed and cheered as they acknowledged the display of the Kings Pointers’ elation at a season ‘well rowed’.

U.S.M.M.A . The Varsity Women’s Four had to endure rather rough conditions during its qualifying heat. By mid-afternoon the water had white caps which made racing more of a survival competition than a speed race.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__u4fjPVmyBA/S8WYswsErgI/AAAAAAAAAII/Dmwz0hSeklE/s200/KNECHT+CUP+2010+077.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459938018008018434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__u4fjPVmyBA/S8WYsTCovKI/AAAAAAAAAH4/Qwg-LZP0mnM/s200/KNECHT+CUP+2010+103.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459938010049592482" />
The Knecht Cup Regatta is one of largest spring competitions for college rowing, attracting over 50 schools from Maine to Florida and as far west at Wisconsin. After arriving on Saturday evening, Coach Derek Hartwick and assistant Coach Daniel Udeanu got the crew up early on Sunday for a four hour workout on the St. John's River. Following the workout the twelve team members headed off to an reception hosted by Mason Flint '64 and his wife Karin. Fifty local alumni their families and other sponsors came out to show support for the team.

Since Sunday the team has been rowing twice a day in addition to a daily weight room session. The weather has been superb for the team and everyone is enjoying the sun and warmth after a cold and snow-filled winter at Kings Point.

On Monday, Jonathon Christian '86 arranged for the team to tour the U.S.S. Gettysburg. On Tuesday the team completed Wet Trainer Safety training at the Mayport Naval Station. The team had to use different techniques to plug holes and escape through a water-filled hatch. Everyone felt that it was a great learning experience and team-building activity.

Wednesday will be another day of double sessions of rowing in the morning and then some time off in the afternoon. The Jacksonville Alumni Chapter and the Florida Chapter of the USMMA Parents Association sponsors training our rowers on the Arlington River.

Coach Derek Hartwick has again decided to train his team in Jacksonville on the Arlington River. It has often been said that the waters of the Arlington River offer the best conditions for rowing in this region. Coach Hartwick considers Jacksonville to be the team’s Spring training “home.”

Parents from out of town are welcome.

Parents will actually be able to stay on the Navy Base in the same Inn as the team, even if they are not military, as guests of their respective rower who carries a military ID. Great rates, too. Just a little coordinating since we cannot make reservations directly, except if you have your own military ID. Once checked in, the Gateway Inn passes info to the Gate Security so that we will have access on and off. (the first time through will require a sponsor which the Jacksonville chapter will do down here).

Scott and Brenda O'Connor are host once again, (904) 251-3097/(904)545-3179.

Spring Training Schedule

CONSOLIDATED SPRING TRAINING ITINERARY

Friday, March 5
1300 (or after last class) Team departs KP
2300 Team arrives at accommodations for the evening. Kings Point rowers got a taste of winter at the Head of the Charles Regatta. The men's four and eight put on a good showing. This is likely the last of competive rowing until spring. For parents who braved rain, cold or sometimes sun, spring crew is a greatly different sport. Boats race against each other similar to what you saw at the Olympics. Wish our rowers a great winter training and fresh legs and arms in Spring.

Head of the Charles

The Granddaddy of them all. The Navy Day Regatta was first started to celebrate the U.S. Navy's birthday and soon expanded to include many of the finest rowing schools on the East Coast. Including Navy, Army and host St. Josephs, Kings Point will row against 84 other schools and clubs.

Once again USMMA has seven boats entered, the womens pair, mens eights and four fours. You can view rowers names for events at https://www.regattacentral.com/index.jsp?tab=regattas
8 Womens Open 2x
13 Mens Collegiate 4+
15 Womens Collegiate 4+
17 Mens Collegiate Frosh/Novice 8+
42 Mens Collegiate Frosh/Novice 4+
43 Womens Collegiate Frosh/Novice 4+
44 Mens Open/Collegiate 8+

If you can come out and watch the rowers, this is a great event. Spectators enjoy spectacular views of Olympic racing shells from the greenway along the Harlem River Drive. Like other fall rowing regattas, the races are run in “head” style, in which each boat is started individually and races against the clock, rather than lining entries across and starting them at once. For many of the participating schools and clubs, this will be their first competition of the fall season.

Kings Point Crew entered novice/plebe men's eight and women's four. We are exited to have Coach Hartwick and Coach Dan leading our men and women. Information about our sport is posted at:
http://www.usmma.edu/waterfront/Crew/about.htm

If you watched Olympic rowing, you will notice that Fall college crew is different. In Head Races, competitors race against the clock and the crew with the fastest time is deemed to be the winner. Racing usually takes place in different categories of boat class and abilities. The length of these races is usually between 3 km and 6 km. Boats are started at 10 to 15 second intervals. To minimize collisions, Boats are usually seeded so that the fastest start first.

I hope parents of rowers will be able to attend at least one event this Fall. The season begins at the Coastweeks Regatta in Mystic and concludes at the Belly of the Carnegie in Princeton. The two largest regattas are the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia October 10 and the grandaddy Head of Charles Regatta in Boston October 17-18. Rowers and coaches enjoy parent support and there is time available for visiting. Bring food and drink for yourselves if you come. Rowers enjoy light snacks but do not expect the coach to let them eat heavy breads or sweets.

Contact me if I can answer questions as a rowing parent. You will notice that college rowing has a very different feel than high school crew or other sports. Kings Point is fortunate to have a varsity team for many schools have self supporting club teams. The big boys such as Navy, Harvard and MIT usually play on their own creeks but rowers interact with fellow athletes from schools local and as far away as Wisconsin, Alabama and California. And after waking up every morning at 0430 it is a real character builder.

Coastweeks Regatta

The 2009 Fall rowing season begins for Kings Point Crew Sunday, September 20 at the Coastweeks Regatta in Mystic, Connecticut. As they did last year, rowers will sail to Mystic Seaport on LIBERTOR accompanied in addition to the 30 rowers by CDR Chris Gasiorek and four power squadron members. The team travels overnight Friday evening to take part in A Mystic Weekend of Rowing. Saturday they watch Olympic rowers will show off their talent on a short, fast course and then rig their boats for racing on Sunday. Liberator arrives at 0800 on Saturday and the team tours Mystic until races start at 1200.

Parents living nearby a welcome to visit on Saturday and cheer the rowing team on Sunday. It is wonderful sport. Regatta information is at http://www.mwor.org/. Mystic Seaport is about 10 miles east of New London in southeastern Connecticut. From Boston South on I-95 take exit 90, turn left at end of ramp onto Route 27 South. From New York City North on I-95, take exit 90 and turn right onto Route 27 South. Proceed approximately one mile to the North Parking lot of the Seaport on the left (opposite Seamen's Inne). Turn left into parking lot and follow directions from Seaport staff. Blue and grey LIBERATOR will be on the waterfront. Rowers will likely be nearby.

Seven, possibly eight US Merchant Marine Academy boats will race on Sunday.
